Again this Tuesday I will be sending home a little, white and yellow half sheet of paper. It is for ordering Puzzlemania magazine. Even if you don't want to order, would you please check "NO" on the back and sign the back. Just by getting signed responses even if they are NO, our class earns free things. Thank you to all of you who did this last week. I was able to order several things for our class due to the returned signed slips!
A note in a sealed envelope will come home this week giving you details on how to log into NetClassroom so that you can see your child's current grades online whenever you wish. Yah!
We will be doing chapel on September 16th. Your child has a sheet with what he or she will say during chapel. Please practice this at home with your child so that all the words are enunciated and pronounced correctly. If possible, help your child memorize his or her part. You are welcome to come watch us perform. Chapel is in the Lower School gym at 8:45 a.m.
Please do not allow your child to use a NUT card on Wednesday or Thursday of this week. There will be some filming done for publicity and having everyone in uniform will add a great deal to the success of the project. Thanks!!!
Book report: All students should be finished reading their book report book by the end of the week. When they finish reading the book, they should take the Reading Counts test on it. After they tell me their score, I will give them the directions and materials for the book report. The book report is due September 23rd.
Reading: My reading group will finish Frindle on Tuesday. We will have a vocabulary test over the words in Chapters 13-15 on Tuesday. The Reading Counts test and end of book written test will be on Wednesday. On Thursday we will start Ramona Quimby, Age 8. Look for a letter coming home Thursday describing what we will be doing and when the vocabulary tests will be.
Reading with Mrs. Chambers: If your child goes to Mrs. Chambers for reading, please go to her website at http://mrscchambers.weebly.com to find out what they are doing in reading each week.
Cursive Handwriting: All letters have been reviewed/taught. If your child continues to have trouble with a particular letter or letters, I will send home extra practice for him or her to do. On each spelling test students get a cursive handwriting grade. You will see this below the spelling test grade.
Language: We will continue to learn the capitalization rules.
Spelling: No spelling this week. Students who get 100% on the spelling pretest on Monday will receive an accelerated spelling list for that week. You can go to www.spellingcity.com for online practice of the grade level spelling words each week. Just go "Find a List" and then for the teacher type in "SCPS Third Grade." All the lists for the entire year will appear. Just choose the one for this week.
Writing: Students will be writing about a birthday and what makes our school great. They will focus on the correct use of a topic sentence and concluding sentence, making sure all sentences stick to the topic, and that all detail sentences give specific details that tell who, what where, when, and why.
Timed Tests: Timed tests will be on Tuesdays this year. This month we will focus on subtraction. Students have 1 minute for 25 problems, 2 minutes for 50 problems, or 4 minutes for 100 problems.
Math: The Chapter 1 test is Tuesday September 6th. Then we will begin Chapter 2 called "Addition and Subtraction Number Sense." We will do lessons 2-1 through 2-3 this week.
Social Studies: We will be learning about banks, line graphs (think stock market), credit cards, and interest.
Bible: Be able to recite Matthew 5:1-6 "When He saw the crowds, He went up to the mountain, sat down, and His disciples came to Him. Then He began to teach them. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the gentle for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for they will be filled."
