I have a challenge for all my third graders. If anyone can get 75 Reading Counts points by October 7th, I will treat them to a pizza party the following day. By getting to 75 points by this day, students are on the path to earning the Reading Counts Spend-the-Night party at the end of the school year. Yah for Kalina Rashkov and Allison DeYoung!!!! They are the first students to meet the reading challenge!
On the Weekly Reader page to my website, you can see which dates are booked are which are still available to be one of our mystery readers. Once you pick a date that is still available, just send me an email, and I will sign you up.
On Tuesday I will be sending home a little, yellow half sheet of paper. It is for ordering Highlights magazine. Even if you don't want to order, would you please check "NO" on the back and sign the back. Just by getting signed responses even if they are NO, our class earns free things. Thank you!
We will be doing chapel on September 16th. Your child has a sheet with what he or she will say during chapel. Please practice this at home with your child so that all the words are enunciated and pronounced correctly. If possible, help your child memorize his or her part. You are welcome to come watch us perform. Chapel is in the Lower School gym at 8:45 a.m.
Book report: All students have chosen a third grade or higher chapter book that they should be reading at home and at school. When they finish reading the book, they should take the Reading Counts test on it. After they tell me their score, I will give them the directions and materials for the book report. The book report is due September 23rd.
Reading: My reading group will be reading Frindle for the first half of the quarter. We will have a vocabulary test over the words in Chapters 10-12 on Thursday.
Reading with Mrs. Chambers: If your child goes to Mrs. Chambers for reading, please go to her website at http://mrscchambers.weebly.com to find out what they are doing in reading each week.
Cursive Handwriting: All letters have been reviewed/taught. If your child continues to have trouble with a particular letter or letters, I will send home extra practice for him or her to do. On each spelling test students get a cursive handwriting grade. You will see this below the spelling test grade.
Language: We will learn the capitalization rules.
Spelling: We will learn the words in Lesson 3. The test will be on Thursday. Students who get 100% on the spelling pretest on Monday will receive an accelerated spelling list for that week. You can go to www.spellingcity.com for online practice of the grade level spelling words each week. Just go "Find a List" and then for the teacher type in "SCPS Third Grade." All the lists for the entire year will appear. Just choose the one for this week.
