October Book Report: For this book report, students will be creating their own Reading Counts test on a chapter book. For this reason, the book they choose cannot be a Reading Counts test book. I sent home guidelines on creating the Reading Counts test. After Mrs. Tootle and I put the tests in the Reading Counts program, the student who created it will be the first to take the test. Punctuation, spelling, and correct grammar count as well as coming up with good questions. The book report is due October 29th.
Reading: If your child has Mrs. Slaughter for reading, then you can go to her website at http://mrsslaughter.weebly.com to find out what they are doing in reading each week. If your child goes to Mrs. Chambers for reading, then you can go to her website at http://mrscchambers.weebly.com to find out what they are doing in reading each week. The accelerated group will continue reading The Mouse and the Motorcycle this week.
Cursive Handwriting: We have reviewed all the letters. Some students need extra practice at home as well. I will continue to write notes on the tops of paper for the children who are still finding it a challenge to form the cursive letters correctly.
Language: Language Test 5 will be Tuesday, October 26th. It will cover pages 38-47. We will then focus on how best to combine sentences to improve our writing.
Spelling: This week we will learn the words in lesson 10. The test is on Thursday. You can go to www.spellingcity.com for online practice of the spelling words each work. Just go "Find a List" and then for the teacher type in "SCPS Third Grade." All the lists for the entire year will appear. Just choose the one for this week.
Writing: This quarter we will focus on organizing our ideas so that they flow together smoothly. Paragraphs should still be indented, have a topic sentence, three or more detail sentences, and a concluding sentence. We will continue to work on making sure all sentence are complete thoughts and not run-on sentences or fragments.
Timed Tests: Timed tests are on Wednesdays. This week will be 100 subtraction problems in 4 minutes. Students should be studying addition and subtraction math facts every night.
Math: We will finish Chapter 3 on adding and subtracting. We will cover lessons 3-12 through 3-14. Diagnostic Checkpoint 3C will be Thursday, October 28th. The Chapter 3 math test will be on Friday, October 29th. Thursday night's homework will be to do the practice test in the book on page 178-179. Here are the answers to the last three problems so that you may help your child with these more difficult problems.
31. Yes; 4 is greater than 3 so regroup 2 tens 3 ones for 1 ten and 13 ones.
32. Yes; yes; It is a yes or no question so an estimate is good enough. 24 rounds to 20. 20+20+20=60 60 is greater than 45 so 3 packages is enough.
33. The picture should look similar to the picture on page 141 in the book where it talks about the School Photos problem. Sample explanation: My picture shows that each friend gave 3 stickers. 3+3+3+3=12. There were 12 stickers.
Social Studies: We will continue our unit on geography and Chapter 1 about communities. The Chapter 1 Test will be on Friday, October 29th. A study guide will go home on Tuesday. Please use this to help your child prepare for the test.
Bible: This week's verse is John 3:30 "He must become greater; I must become less."
