Reading Challenge: If anyone can get 75 Reading Counts points by October 7th, I will treat them to a pizza party on October 12th. Yah for Caylie Maye Cornwell, McCulloch Hoxie, Geshna Paravata, Kalina Rashkov, and Allison DeYoung!!!! They have meet the reading challenge!
Book report: Children should choose a third grade or higher Reading Counts chapter book that is a biography or autobiography for their October book report. All books need to be shown to Mrs. Speir for approval. The book needs to be finished and the Reading Counts test taken by October 17. After that, I will explain and hand out the book report directions to the class.
Reading: We are reading Ramona Quimby, Age 8. The vocabulary test over the words in chapters 7-9 is on Wednesday, October 5th. We will also take the Reading Counts test that day. Then we will begin our new novel, The Mouse and the Motorcycle. Look for a letter from me to come home on Thursday explaining the requirements for our latest novel.
Reading with Mrs. Chambers: If your child goes to Mrs. Chambers for reading, please go to her website at http://mrscchambers.weebly.com to find out what they are doing in reading each week.
Cursive Handwriting: All letters have been reviewed/taught. If your child continues to have trouble with a particular letter or letters, I will send home extra practice for him or her to do. On each spelling test students get a cursive handwriting grade. You will see this below the spelling test grade.
Language: We will review the punctuation rules for periods and commas this week. The next language test is on Wednesday. Then we will begin learning about possessive nouns.
Spelling: We will learn the words in Lesson 8 this week. Students who get 100% on the spelling pretest on Monday will receive an accelerated spelling list for that week. You can go to www.spellingcity.com for online practice of the grade level spelling words each week. Just go "Find a List" and then for the teacher type in "SCPS Third Grade." All the lists for the entire year will appear. Just choose the one for this week.
Writing: For the next five weeks students will be learning how to organize their writing. This week we will focus on writing another persuasive paragraph.
Timed Tests: Timed tests will be on Tuesdays this year. This month I give students both additon and subtraction timed tests. They should be ready each week for both kinds of timed tests. Students have 1 minute for 25 problems, 2 minutes for 50 problems, or 4 minutes for 100 problems.
Math: We will continue with Chapter 3 on addition and subtraction. We will cover lessons 3-3 through 3-6. Diagnostic Checkpoint 3A is on Thursday.
Science: We will continue with Unit A Chapter 1 on plants. This week we will be learning how seeds spread, how plants make food, and how use the food they make.
Bible: Be able to recite Matthew 5:7-12 "Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs. Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and falsely say every kind of evil against you because of Me. Be glad and rejoice, because your reward is great in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets before you."
