Reading: If your child has Mrs. Slaughter for reading, then you can go to her website at http://mrsslaughter.weebly.com to find out what they are doing in reading each week. If your child goes to Mrs. Chambers for reading, then you can go to her website at http://mrscchambers.weebly.com to find out what they are doing in reading each week. The accelerated group is reading Ramona Quimby, Age 8.
Cursive Handwriting: We have reviewed all the letters. Some students need extra practice at home as well. I will continue to write notes on the tops of paper for the children who are still finding it a challenge to form the cursive letters correctly.
Language: We will continue learning punctuation rules for the period and comma.
Spelling: We will learn the words in lesson 7. The test is on Thursday. You can go to www.spellingcity.com for online practice of the spelling words each work. Just go "Find a List" and then for the teacher type in "SCPS Third Grade." All the lists for the entire year will appear. Just choose the one for this week.
Writing: We are working on making our ideas clear and more exact as well as writing paragraphs with a topic sentence, three or more detail sentences, and a concluding sentence. We will review indenting paragraphs and making sure all sentences are complete thoughts. We will also be going through the complete writing process by having students choose one rough draft that they have written. They will then edit it, have a peer edit it, and then write a final draft.
Timed Tests: Timed tests are on Wednesdays. This week will be 100 subtraction problems in 4 minutes. Students each have a practice test that we took last week that they should use to help them practice at home. Students should be studying addition and subtraction math facts every night.
Math: We will finish with Chapter 2 this week on addition and subtraction number sense. We will complete lessons 2-10 through 2-12. Diagnostic Checkpoint 2C is on Thursday. Please remember you can do this at home with your child as practice before we do the graded one in class. The Chapter 2 Test is Friday, October 1st. On Thursday night students will do the practice test in the book on pages 112-113 to help them prepare for the test. Here are the answers to numbers 27 through 30 so that you can help your child prepare. If the problem says explain, it is very important that your child explain fully his or her thought process when answering the question.
27. 7 rooms; I wrote a number sentence. 13 - 6 = 7.
28. No, she does not have enough money. I rounded $37.99 to $40 and $44.95 to $45. Then I added $40 + $45 = $85. $85 is greater than $70.
29. Yes, they have enough. $170 + $170 = $340. Sample similar problem: Elisa's family went on a trip that was 500 miles. The first day they drove 328 miles. The second day they drove 141 miles. Estimate to decide if they finished their trip.
30. Missing Out numbers: 0, 4; Students should then create a table that has an In and Out with 5 In numbers and 5 Out numbers. They must write the rule for their table.
