Vocabulary and Spelling Procedures for Fifth Grade
Vocabulary and Spelling Tests are on Thursdays.
1st Week Vocabulary
Monday: Vocabulary words for the unit are introduced. Students make vocabulary cards following the directions on the back of this page. The cards may be written in print or cursive, but they must be spelled correctly and written NEATLY. The cards are due on Friday and count as a classwork grade.
Tuesday-Thursday: Work on vocabulary cards.
1st Week Spelling
Monday-Wednesday: Learn how to spell the 12 vocabulary words, the two Latin roots (and their meanings), and the four words that derive from the two Latin roots.
Thursday: Spelling Test The words must be written neatly in cursive with the letters formed correctly. If is are not dotted or ts not crossed, the word will be marked wrong.
2nd Week Vocabulary
Monday-Wednesday: Students will complete the vocabulary workbook pages. These will count either as a homework or classwork grade depending on where the majority of the work was completed. The answers must be in cursive and spelled correctly or will be marked wrong.
Thursday: Vocabulary Test The words must be written neatly in cursive and spelled correctly or the answer will be marked wrong. One point will be taken off for undotted is or uncrossed ts. It is very important to study the synonyms and antonyms for the words as knowing these will be part of the test.
