Calling all parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and older siblings! If you would like to be a mystery reader for our class, we have 4 spots left starting in February and going through the end of the school year. Just take a look on the Weekly Reader tab at the very bottom for a list of dates that are available. Then email me to let me know which date you would like. I can't wait to hear from you!
Congratulations to John Henry and Abby for making it into our third grade spelling bee!!!!
This quarter's reading challenge is to get 225 Reading Counts points by March 10th, the end of the third quarter. Getting 225 points by this date will put them on the right track for making it to the end of the year sleepover. For those who meet the challenge, I will be providing pizza for lunch. Zadie, Molly, and Taylor have already met this challenge as well since all three girls have over 250 Reading Counts points and will also get to go to the Reading Counts sleepover at the end of the year! This is a huge accomplishment, and I am so proud of them.
Reading: If your child has Mrs. Slaughter for reading, then you can go to her website at http://mrsslaughter.weebly.com to find out what they are doing in reading each week. If your child goes to Mrs. Chambers for reading, then you can go to her website at http://mrscchambers.weebly.com to find out what they are doing in reading each week. The accelerated group is reading Shiloh.
Cursive Handwriting: We have reviewed all the letters. Some students need extra practice at home as well. I will continue to write notes on the tops of paper for the children who are still finding it a challenge to form the cursive letters correctly.
Language: We will work on the correct use of may, can, teach, and learn.
Spelling: No spelling list this week. You can go to www.spellingcity.com for online practice of the spelling words each week. Just go "Find a List" and then for the teacher type in "SCPS Third Grade." All the lists for the entire year will appear. Just choose the one for this week.
Writing: This week we will continue to write our own picture books. I will be teaching the children how word choice can affect what an author is writing.
Timed Tests: Timed tests are on Wednesdays. This week will be 100 subtraction problems in 4 minutes. Students should be studying addition and subtraction math facts every night.
Math: We will finish Chapter 6. This week we will cover lessons 6-11 through 6-12. Diagnostic Checkpoint 6B will be Wednesday, January 109h. The Chapter 6 Test will be Thursday, January 20th. Wednesday night students should complete the practice test in the book on pages 356 and 357. This must be turned in the next day. Multiplication timed test dates:
January 21st - threes
January 28th - fours
February 4th - sixs
February 10th - sevens
February 18th - eights
Social Studies: We are finished with Chapter 2. The test is Thursday, January 20th. A study guide will come home on Tuesday. We will also continue with our study of geography and map skills. Students should be working on their Georgia Day Project. The filled out information sheet is due January 26th, and the poster is due February 2nd. We place the finished products in the hall for all to view on Georgia Day. This week students also have a Timeline Project to complete. The worksheet is due Tuesday. On Tuesday in class, students will receive their premade timeline and then that is due on Friday.
