The week of October 18-22 Lower School Outreach is collecting items to be donated to the homeless. We will be collecting socks, stocking hats, gloves, and scarves. If you are able, please donate something for this worthy cause.
October Book Report: For this book report, students will be creating their own Reading Counts test on a chapter book. For this reason, the book they choose cannot be a Reading Counts test book. I will be sending home guidelines on creating the Reading Counts test. After Mrs. Tootle and I put the tests in the Reading Counts program, the student who created it will be the first to take the test. Punctuation, spelling, and correct grammar count as well as coming up with
Reading: If your child has Mrs. Slaughter for reading, then you can go to her website at http://mrsslaughter.weebly.com to find out what they are doing in reading each week. If your child goes to Mrs. Chambers for reading, then you can go to her website at http://mrscchambers.weebly.com to find out what they are doing in reading each week. The accelerated group is reading Ramona Quimby, Age 8.
Cursive Handwriting: We have reviewed all the letters. Some students need extra practice at home as well. I will continue to write notes on the tops of paper for the children who are still finding it a challenge to form the cursive letters correctly.
Language: We will review the punctuation rules for the period and comma. The test over pages 27 through 37 will be on Friday, October 8th.
Spelling: We will learn the words in lesson 8. The test is on Thursday. You can go to www.spellingcity.com for online practice of the spelling words each work. Just go "Find a List" and then for the teacher type in "SCPS Third Grade." All the lists for the entire year will appear. Just choose the one for this week.
Writing: We are working on making our ideas clear and more exact as well as writing paragraphs with a topic sentence, three or more detail sentences, and a concluding sentence. We will review indenting paragraphs and making sure all sentences are complete thoughts. We will also be going through the complete writing process by having students choose one rough draft that they have written. They will then edit it, have a peer edit it, and then write a final draft.
Timed Tests: Timed tests are on Wednesdays. This week will be 100 subtraction problems in 4 minutes. Students each have a practice test that we took last week that they should use to help them practice at home. Students should be studying addition and subtraction math facts every night.
Math: We will begin Chapter 3 on adding and subtracting. We will cover lessons 3-1 through 3-5. Diagnostic Checkpoint 3A will be Wednesday, October 13th.
Science: We will finish Unit A Chapter 1 called Types of Plants. We will learn about photosysnthesis this week. The students will receive a study guide to help them study for the test. They should also use their science vocabulary cards to learn the science terms from the chapter. The Unit A Chapter 1 test is Friday, October 8th.
Bible: This week's verse is John 14:6 I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
