Parent/Teacher Conferences: I look forward to meeting with you all on Monday.
Xtra Math: Please remember to have your child do Xtra Math Monday though Friday. They will get the best results from doing the practice one time per day. If your child missed one day this week, please have him or her do it on Saturday or Sunday so that he or she is getting five days of practice.
****Caroline, Noah, Emelia, Jonathan, Jack, Alayna, and Dhruv have met the first reading challenge!!! We will be having a pizza party on Tuesday to celebrate. Thank you to Caroline's mom for providing the drinks and Jonathan's mom for providing dessert. These hard-working students will get to eat lunch outside at the picnic tables.
The next reading challenge is to get to 150 Reading Counts points by December 14th. Students who meet the challenge will be treated to a pizza party the following Monday. By getting to 150 points by this day, students are on the path to earning the Reading Counts Spend-the-Night party at the end of the school year. Emelia, Noah, and Caroline have already met the second quarter challenge!
Book Report: The October book report book must be finished and the Reading Counts test taken on it by October 19th.
Reading: My reading group will be reading The Mouse and the Motorcycle. Students will receive a parent letter on Tuesday describing what we will be doing with this novel.

Cursive Handwriting: Students need to work on slowing down to improve neatness. We will continue to practice all letters. Students need to focus on sitting all words on the line and making tall letters such as all capital letters and lower case b, d, f, h, k, l, and t should touch the top line.
Language: We will learn the rules for making words possessive as well as how to correctly use quotation marks.
Spelling: Please make sure your child leaves the spelling workbook in his/her binder. We will learn the words in Lesson 9. Students must also know the definitions for the vocabulary words and how to spell the words that are part of the definition. The test will be on Thursday. Under the spelling grade on each test is a grade (S, W, N, or U) for their cursive. You can go to www.spellingcity.com for online practice of the grade level spelling words each week. Just go "Find a List" and then for the teacher type in "Brenda Speir." All the lists for the entire year will appear. Just choose the one for this week.
Writing: Students will be learning about narrative writing and what makes a piece of narrative writing excellent.
Timed Tests: Timed tests will be on Tuesdays this year. This quarter we will focus on addition and subtraction. Students have 1 minute for 25 problems, 2 minutes for 50 problems, or 4 minutes for 100 problems.
Math: We will cover lessons 3-6 through 3-9.
Science: The test over Unit A Chapter 1 will be on Wednesday. Students received a study guide last Friday. Please make sure your child studies over the weekend for the test. S/he should know and understand all the vocabulary words in the chapter. Thank you to Angel Sharp for providing our soil and cups. The seeds are all planted and hopefully will emerge soon. Plan to take a peek when you come for conferences on Monday.
Social Studies: We will begin Chapter 1 called "Communities" and work on geography skills.
Bible: Matthew 5:9 "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God." Be prepared to write the verse on Friday. Spelling does not count but capitalization does.
