Book report: Children should choose a third grade or higher Reading Counts chapter book that is a biography or autobiography for their October book report. All books need to be shown to Mrs. Speir for approval. The book needs to be finished and the Reading Counts test taken by October 17. After that, I will explain and hand out the book report directions to the class. The book report poster, which should be neatly done, proofread, and in full color is due October 31st.
I will be out on Thursday writing curriculum descriptions and completing curriculum mapping for the school.
Reading: We are reading The Mouse and the Motorcycle. The Chapters 1-3 vocabulary test is Friday.
Reading with Mrs. Chambers: If your child goes to Mrs. Chambers for reading, please go to her website at http://mrscchambers.weebly.com to find out what they are doing in reading each week.
Cursive Handwriting: All letters have been reviewed/taught. If your child continues to have trouble with a particular letter or letters, I will send home extra practice for him or her to do. On each spelling test students get a cursive handwriting grade. You will see this below the spelling test grade.
Language: We will review possessives and learn about quotation marks in direct quotations.
Spelling: No spelling this week. Students who get 100% on the spelling pretest on Monday will receive an accelerated spelling list for that week. You can go to www.spellingcity.com for online practice of the grade level spelling words each week. Just go "Find a List" and then for the teacher type in "SCPS Third Grade." All the lists for the entire year will appear. Just choose the one for this week.
Writing: For the next five weeks students will be learning how to organize their writing. This week we will focus on writing steps in an order that makes sense.
Timed Tests: Timed tests will be on Tuesdays this year. This month I give students both additon and subtraction timed tests. They should be ready each week for both kinds of timed tests. Students have 1 minute for 25 problems, 2 minutes for 50 problems, or 4 minutes for 100 problems.
Math: We will continue with Chapter 3 on addition and subtraction. We will cover lessons 3-7 through 3-9. Diagnostic Checkpoint 3B is next week on Tuesday, October 18th.
Science: We will finish Unit A Chapter 1 on plants. This week we will review for the test. Students will receive a study guide on Wednesday. The Chapter 1 test is on Friday. *****Check out the pictures of the students with their plants on my home page.
Bible: God is merciful and so am I. No Bible verse this week. (Yes, that means you do not have to recite Matthew 5:1-12 to me.)
