This quarter's reading challenge is to get 225 Reading Counts points by March 10th, the end of the third quarter. Getting 225 points by this date will put them on the right track for making it to the end of the year sleepover. For those who meet the challenge, I will be providing pizza for lunch. Jewell, John Henry, Austin, Morgan, Zadie, Molly, and Taylor have already met this challenge. I am so proud of them.
Reading: If your child has Mrs. Slaughter for reading, then you can go to her website at http://mrsslaughter.weebly.com to find out what they are doing in reading each week. If your child goes to Mrs. Chambers for reading, then you can go to her website at http://mrscchambers.weebly.com to find out what they are doing in reading each week. The accelerated group is working on figurative language this week. After spring break, we will read Everything on a Waffle.
Cursive Handwriting: Many students need to slow down so that their cursive is not messy. All words should sit on the line, tall letters should touch the top line, and a, o, and d must be closed.
Language: We will continue to learn about nouns.
Spelling: We are learning the words in lesson 26 this week. You can go to www.spellingcity.com for online practice of the spelling words each week. Just go "Find a List" and then for the teacher type in "SCPS Third Grade." All the lists for the entire year will appear. Just choose the one for this week.
Writing: This week we will work on word choice. Students are working on choosing more exact nouns and verbs as well as adding interesting adjectives to their writing. This week we will also work on coloring the illustrations for the picture books. Whew! We are almost done. At the end, we will share the books with all of you.
Timed Tests: Timed tests for addition and subtraction are on Wednesdays. This week will be 100 subtraction problems in 4 minutes. Students should be studying addition and subtraction math facts every night. Now that students have been tested over each multiplication fact set separately, they will be tested with the multiplication facts mixed up. On these tests, the highest fact will be 10 times 10. These tests will be every Friday until the end of the school year so students need to be practicing the facts mixed up each night as well. (This week we will actually take the test on Monday since I didn't have time to give it on Friday.)
Math: We will cover lessons 8-11 through 8-14 this week. When we return from spring break we will have Diagnostic Checkpoint 8C and then the Chapter 8 test. So that what we have learned in this chapter in not lost over spring break, I recommend reviewing it during the break.
Science: We will continue Unit B Chapter 1 on ecosystems. This week we will learn all about ocean ecosystems. The Unit B Chapter 1 Test will be on Thursday. A study guide will go home on Wednesday, but you can start preparing now by reviewing all the vocabulary terms from the chapter and rereading the chapter at home.
Bible: No Bible verse this week due to the student holiday on Friday.
