Georgia Day: Georgia Day is February 12th. Students should come to school that day dressed as either an Indian or a Colonial child. We are still in need of two volunteers who can help with the activities that day. If you can help, please let me know.
Valentine's Day: We will be exchanging Valentines at our Valentine's Day party. Please have your child make/address a Valentine to each of other children in class. Here is a list of names: Kerrigan, Will, Nicholas, Hayden, Emelia, Noah, Jonathan, Jack, Robbie, Doc, Ellie, Caroline, Andrew, Dhruv, Riley, Ty, William, Keniyah, and Alayna.
Honors Chapel is at 8:45 this Friday in the Lower School Gym.
Xtra Math: Please remember to have your child do Xtra Math Monday though Friday. This is a daily homework assignment. If your computer crashes, etc., please just send me a note so your child can be excused for that night's practice.
Georgia Day project: Last week your child brought home an instruction sheet on their Georgia Day project. The project has three parts: an information sheet, a poster, and a paragraph. The information sheet is due February 1st. The poster is due February 4th. The paragraph will be done in class.
The next reading challenge is to get to 225 Reading Counts points by March 14th. We will have a pizza party the following Tuesday for all those who meet the challenge.
Book Report: Students will be reading a biography this month. The book needs to be finished and the test taken by January 24th. They will also be completing a Biography Poster at home. The Biography Poster will be due March 1st.
Reading: We will continue reading Shiloh. The vocabulary test over the words in Chapters 6-8 will be January 23rd.

Cursive Handwriting: Students need to work on slowing down to improve neatness.
Language: We will learn the correct usage of two, too, and to and then will review for the test. Test 9 will be on Friday and will cover pages 86 through 96.
Spelling: Please make sure your child leaves the spelling workbook in his/her binder. There is no spelling unit this week. Students must also know the definitions for the vocabulary words and how to spell the words that are part of the definition. Under the spelling grade on each test is a grade (S, W, N, or U) for their cursive. You can go to www.spellingcity.com for online practice of the grade level spelling words each week. Just go "Find a List" and then for the teacher type in "Brenda Speir." All the lists for the entire year will appear. Just choose the one for this week.
Writing: Students are working on developing better word choice in their writing in order to put away overused words such as said, got, went, big, small, and very. We will also be focusing on narrative writing this month.
Timed Tests: Timed tests will be on Tuesdays this year. For the remainder of this quarter we will focus on subtraction and multiplication. Students will continue to have a subtraction timed test each week. Listed below are the test dates for the multiplication tests and what part of the multiplication table will be covered. Students have 1 minute for 25 problems, 2 minutes for 50 problems, or 4 minutes for 100 problems.

Math: Diagnostic Checkpoint 6B is on Tuesday, January 22nd. The Chapter 6 Test will be on January 23rd. Then we will begin Chapter 7 on division.
Social Studies: We will continue Chapter 2 called "Communities are Places." We will also learning more geography and map skills. Students will have a test over the 15 vocabulary words for which they made flash cards. The vocabulary test will be on January 25th.
Bible: Psalm 33:1 "Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise Him."
