Reading Challenge: The next reading challenge is to get 225 Reading Counts points by March 8th. Frankie, Caylie Maye, McCulloch, William, Geshna, and Kalina already have more than this many points. Way to go! Allison and Teddie are very close! Read, read, read!
Ethan and William won our class spelling bee. They will be participating in the grade level spelling bee this Thursday. We will all cheer them on!
Georgia Day Project: On January 5th, students will be bringing home a sheet explaining the Georgia Day project. In class students will be picking a location to visit. While at the location, they will fill out the information sheet which is due January 23rd. We will use the information sheet to write a paragraph in school. Students will also be making a poster at home. The poster is due February 1st. The posters and paragraphs will be on display in the hall all during the month of February.
Reading: We will be reading Shiloh. We will also be working on learning a variety of figurative language literary devices. The Chapter 3-5 vocabulary test is Tuesday. The Chapter 6-8 vocabulary test is Friday.

Cursive Handwriting: All letters have been reviewed/taught. If your child continues to have trouble with a particular letter or letters, I will send home extra practice for him or her to do. On each spelling test students get a cursive handwriting grade. You will see this below the spelling test grade.
Language: We will be learning the correct usage for sit, sat, set, to, two, and too.
Spelling: No spelling lesson this week due to the holiday. Students who get 100% on the spelling pretest on Monday will receive an accelerated spelling list for that week. You can go to www.spellingcity.com for online practice of the grade level spelling words each week. Just go "Find a List" and then for the teacher type in "SCPS Third Grade." All the lists for the entire year will appear. Just choose the one for this week.
Writing: Students will be working on word choice while writing a variety of forms of poetry. The will also be reading lots of poetry and writing about what they like and dislike about the poems they read. The will also be writing a recommendation for a favorite poem.
Timed Tests: Timed tests will be on Tuesdays this year. This month students will have a subtraction and a multiplication timed test each Tuesday. Students have 1 minute for 25 problems, 2 minutes for 50 problems, or 4 minutes for 100 problems. Below is the list of test dates for the multiplication timed tests. I sent home a packet last Monday that had the test dates listed, test parameters, and example tests that you may photocopy for practice at home.

Math: We will begin Chapter 7 on division concepts and facts this week. We will cover lessons 7-1 through 7-3.
Social Studies: We will finish Chapter 2 called "Communities Are Places." Students will learn about the history of Mt. Dora, Florida and that all places have histories. The Chapter 2 Test is Monday, January 23rd. They will also learn how to read, use, and create timelines. On Wednesday, they will be assigned the "My Timeline Project." They will need to complete the "My Timeline Worksheet" over the weekend. The following Monday (Jan. 23rd), they will be given a preprinted timeline poster to use to finish the project. The timeline poster will be due January 27th.
