Georgia Day: Georgia Day is February 12th. Students should come to school that day dressed as either an Indian or a Colonial child. We are still in need of two volunteers who can help with the activities that day. If you can help, please let me know.
Valentine's Day: We will be exchanging Valentines at our Valentine's Day party. Please have your child make/address a Valentine to each of the other children in class. Here is a list of names: Kerrigan, Will, Nicholas, Hayden, Emelia, Noah, Jonathan, Jack, Robbie, Doc, Ellie, Caroline, Andrew, Dhruv, Riley, Ty, William, Keniyah, and Alayna. Thank you to those parents who are providing the treat/snack for our party. Just send it in with your child that morning. Each class will share the snack at a time that works with their schedule.
Xtra Math: Please remember to have your child do Xtra Math Monday though Friday. This is a daily homework assignment. If your computer crashes, etc., please just send me a note so your child can be excused for that night's practice.
Georgia Day project: Last week your child brought home an instruction sheet on their Georgia Day project. The project has three parts: an information sheet, a poster, and a paragraph. The information sheet is due February 1st. The poster is due February 4th. The paragraph will be done in class.
The next reading challenge is to get to 225 Reading Counts points by March 14th. We will have a pizza party the following Tuesday for all those who meet the challenge. So far, Emelia, Noah, Jonathan, Caroline, Keniyah, Alayna, and Jack have met the challenge!
The Biography Poster is due March 1st.
February Book: Students should be reading their historical fiction Reading Counts chapter book. Students will only have to take the Reading Counts test on the book. This should be completed by February 15th.
Reading: We will watch the movie Shiloh. Then for the next few weeks we will be studying figurative language devices.

Cursive Handwriting: Students need to work on slowing down to improve neatness.
Language: We will learn correct verb usage.
Spelling: Please make sure your child leaves the spelling workbook in his/her binder. They will learn the words in Lesson 20 this week. Students must also know the definitions for the vocabulary words and how to spell the words that are part of the definition. Under the spelling grade on each test is a grade (S, W, N, or U) for their cursive. You can go to www.spellingcity.com for online practice of the grade level spelling words each week. Just go "Find a List" and then for the teacher type in "Brenda Speir." All the lists for the entire year will appear. Just choose the one for this week.
Writing: Students are working on developing better word choice in their writing in order to put away overused words such as said, got, went, big, small, and very. This week we will write our Georgia Day paragraphs that go with the location students recently visited.
Timed Tests: Timed tests will be on Tuesdays this year. For the remainder of this quarter we will focus on subtraction and multiplication. Students will continue to have a subtraction timed test each week. Listed below are the test dates for the multiplication tests and what part of the multiplication table will be covered. Students have 1 minute for 25 problems, 2 minutes for 50 problems, or 4 minutes for 100 problems.

Math: Diagnostic Checkpoint 7B is on Friday. This week we will cover lessons 7-6 through 7-9.
Social Studies: The Chapter 2 Test is on Tuesday. Students received the Chapter 2 study guide last Friday. The Timeline Poster is due Monday, February 11th.
