I have a challenge for all my third graders. If anyone can get 75 Reading Counts points by October 7th, I will treat them to a pizza party the following day. By getting to 75 points by this day, students are on the path to earning the Reading Counts Spend-the-Night party at the end of the school year.
Reading: This week students will begin switching classes for reading. They will remain with me if they are in the accelerated readin group and will go to Mrs. Chambers if they are in the third grade reading group. (I sent a letter home with all accelerated readers.) If your child goes to Mrs. Chambers for reading, then you can go to her website at http://mrscchambers.weebly.com to find out what they are doing in reading each week. My reading group will be reading Frindle for the first half of the quarter. We will have a vocabulary test over the words in Chapters 1-4 on Thursday, August 18th.
Cursive Handwriting: We will be reviewing all lower case letters this week.
Language: We will learn the different kinds of sentences.
Spelling: We will learn the words in Lesson 1. The test will be on Thursday. Students who get 100% on the spelling pretest on Monday will receive an accelerated spelling list for that week. You can go to www.spellingcity.com for online practice of the grade level spelling words each week. Just go "Find a List" and then for the teacher type in "SCPS Third Grade." All the lists for the entire year will appear. Just choose the one for this week.
Writing: Students will learn how to select ideas and stick to a topic.
Timed Tests: Timed tests will be on Tuesdays this year. This month we will focus on additon. Students have 1 minute for 25 problems, 2 minutes for 50 problems, or 4 minutes for 100 problems.
Math: We will continue with Chapter 1 called "Place Value and Money." We will do lessons 1-3 through 1-6. Friday we will do Diagnostic Checkpoint 1A. This will be graded. There is a copy of it in the math book and online so you are welcome to have your child do it at home for practice before we do the graded one in class on Friday.
Social Studies: We will be learning how our classroom economy works.
Bible: Matthew 5:1-2 "When He saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain, sat down, and His disciples came to Him. Then He began to teach them." Be prepared to write the verse on Friday. Spelling does not count but capitalization does.
